"Temple of the City Navel"
Its Thai name, Wat Sadue Muang, literally translates to "Temple of the City Navel," reflecting its location at the geographical center of the ancient walled city of Chiang Mai.

Original Location of the City Pillar
The temple was the original spot where King Mangrai erected the Inthakhin (city pillar) in 1296 CE when he founded Chiang Mai as the capital of the Lanna Kingdom.

The Inthakhin Legend
According to local legend, the god Indra gave the Inthakhin pillar to the local people for protection against demons. The temple became a place of great spiritual significance because it housed this sacred pillar.

The Pillar Was Moved
The original city pillar remained here until 1800 CE when King Kawila relocated it to a shrine within the grounds of the nearby Wat Chedi Luang, where it is still housed today.

Stunning Lanna Architecture
The temple features a beautifully ornate Lanna-style vihara (assembly hall) made from dark teak wood coated in a black lacquer and adorned with intricate gold decorations, making it a visually striking monument in the old city.

Name and Meaning
The name "Phan Tao" or "Pan Tao" originates from two main legends. One suggests that performing a single good deed here will multiply the merit thousandfold. The other links the area to hosting a thousand kilns used to cast the Attharos Buddha image for the adjacent Wat Chedi Luang.

Former Royal Residence

The temple's distinctive golden teak wood vihara (assembly hall) was originally the "Ho Kham" or royal living quarters for Phra Chao Maha Tara Prathet, the 5th ruler of Chiang Mai (reigned 1846–1854).

Golden Teak Architecture
This temple is home to one of the most complete and beautiful existing teak wooden buildings in the Lanna style. The original royal hall was dismantled and rebuilt as the present temple structure in 1876, during the reign of Phra Chao Inthawichayanon, the 7th ruler.

Unique Gable
The vihara's exquisite wooden gable (front facade) features intricate carvings of a "peacock," a symbolic motif influenced by Burmese artistry, adorned with ornate glass mosaic work (krachok chuen).

Ancient Landmark
Wat Phan Tao is an ancient temple established early in the 21st Buddhist century (around 1391 CE) and has stood as a long-standing companion landmark to the magnificent Wat Chedi Luang Worawihan. It was officially registered as a historical site in 1980.

Once the Tallest Structure in Lanna
When completed around the mid-15th century during King Tilokaraj’s reign, the Chedi Luang stood approximately 82–88 meters (270–289 feet) tall with a base width of 54 meters, making it the highest and largest building in the entire Lanna Kingdom at that time.

Former Home of the Emerald Buddha
This stupa holds immense historical significance as it once housed the "Phra Kaew Morakot" or the Emerald Buddha (officially Phra Phuttha Maha Mani Rattana Patimakorn) from 1468 CE, before the statue was moved to Luang Prabang and eventually to Bangkok.

Damage from a Major Earthquake
The stupa’s iconic, shattered spire collapsed dramatically during a massive earthquake in 1545 CE. This seismic event reduced the structure to its current height of approximately 60 meters.

Elephant Sculptures at the Base
The base of the chedi features half-body stucco elephant sculptures, a design influenced by Sri Lankan and Sukhothai art styles. The elephants visible today are modern reconstructions created during restoration projects.

A Center of Faith and the City Pillar Shrine

The monument commemorates the alliance of three revered monarchs: King Mengrai (founder of Chiang Mai and the Lanna Kingdom), King Ramkhamhaeng of Sukhothai, and King Ngam Muang of Phayao. They are believed to have worked together to design and establish the city of Chiang Mai in 1296 CE.
