I hope this small touch of dark humour will be understood in the spirit intended. My family and I were among the residents forced to leave our home in Lège-Cap-Ferret because of the forest fires.
We are now safe with my parents in the Pyrénées, although access to our town remains prohibited.
Our immense gratitude goes to the municipal team of Lège-Cap-Ferret, who continue to keep us remarkably well informed while working day and night against this devastating fire; to the French and European firefighters; to the municipal and national police; and to the farmers and countless volunteers supporting them.
It was terrifying to be in a house surrounded by fire—at one point, the flames were only about 700 metres from our home—with the air filled with thick black smoke.
Yet we know that we are still among the fortunate ones.
