ABSTRACT:Wood has long been a fundamental material in Thai architecture, shaping a rich tradition of craftsmanship and embodying the cultural identity of communities. This knowledge has been passed down through generations within artisan lineages, such as “Sala” in the North, “Chang” in the Central region, and “Tuke” in the Malay South. However, modern construction methods—faster and more durable—have gradually replaced traditional practices, leading to the decline of local craftsmanship and the loss of valuable knowledge. As a result, even historic wooden mosques in southern Thailand face challenges in proper maintenance and continuity, raising a critical question: how can this indigenous knowledge be preserved and sustained, particularly within the Malay cultural context?
The wooden mosque design project in Ban Huai Krathing, Yala, addresses this issue by using community participation as a key mechanism for knowledge transmission. Local people are involved in every stage—from planting trees and processing timber to constructing a modular, hand-built mosque using traditional techniques. The design integrates contemporary needs while maintaining local wisdom, alongside spaces for Islamic learning and carpentry education. Ultimately, the mosque becomes more than a place of worship; it serves as a “living learning space” that preserves and passes on the Tuke craftsmanship to future generations in a sustainable way.
