The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Combating Wildlife Trafficking Program is pleased to announce the 2024 Notice of Funding Opportunity for the new Species Conservation Catalyst Fund (SCCF) on Songbird Trade. Proposals are due December 8, 2023.

The SCCF on Songbird Trade focuses on the trade of songbirds native to the Guiana Shield and Caribbean for singing competitions. This sport consists of “racing” male songbirds to assess which bird can sing a specific song the most in a given time. Competitions can involve high financial stakes and the sport plays a significant socio-cultural and economic role. The current singing competition songbird trade appears to be driving local or range-wide declines of potentially 15 wild passerine species, including seed-finches, seedeaters, buntings, and grosbeaks.
