Florida’s proposed Homestead Tax Bill, if approved by voters, would provide a significant increase in the homestead exemption for county and city property taxes. The proposal would raise the exemption from the current $50,000 to $150,000 in 2027 and $250,000 in 2028, potentially reducing the taxable value of many owner-occupied homes and lowering property tax obligations for existing Florida homeowners.
The proposal does not change the current $25,000 school tax exemption, nor does it affect non-ad valorem assessments such as trash collection, stormwater, and other service fees. Under the proposal, homeowners who already have Florida homestead status before January 1, 2027, would generally receive the greatest benefit.
While the actual tax savings would vary based on a property’s assessed value and local tax rates, the overall intent of the legislation is to provide meaningful property tax relief by reducing the portion of a home’s value subject to county and municipal taxation. The measure would only take effect if approved by Florida voters. ,
