Conversation starter

In the sales and relationship game, the approach to starting a conversation that makes a connection is key. When talking with new prospective clients who are strangers, there is not a lot of latitude with a broad range of topics. Skilled conversation starters are able to direct the dialogue of a conversation to a place they want it to go.

It seems, though, the tactics are always the same. A conversation starts with something about the weather or sports. If not those worn out topics, then a joke or a compliment. Some try with a thought provoking question. How about trying this? Start with asking a favor.

There is something magical about asking for a favor. I did not take a lot of psychology in college, but asking for a favor sparks an inherent connection between the favor giver and the favor asker. It makes the favor giver more open to what else the favor asker might say. It doesn't have to be something big...it can be as simple as asking if "you can borrow a pen" or "asking for directions".

So consider adding the "ask a favor" tactic to your conversation start-up approach and watch your relationship and connections grow!

A lack of readiness makes a surprise more of an emotional response as opposed to controlled correction response. Just have in your mind to expect the unexpected and that will mentally allow you control your response objectively.

Look for alternatives - Out-of-the-box thinkers do better here but sometimes a solution may not appear to be directly on target but indirectly with a little time and some other tasks...is the right thing to do. Choose to look for alternatives.

Goals fulfill Purpose
I am a goal-oriented person, so I question this statistic: only 5% of people have personal goals they are working to accomplish. I suppose you can factor in all people and not just businesspeople, but the stat shocks me. Goals are like a rudder and your business, or your vocation is like a ship. Without a rudder your ship cannot steer, and you wander of course whichever way the wind blows on any given day.

You can't fulfill a dream without first understanding your purpose. What helps you understand your purpose is defining goals you are trying to achieve. The two are interrelated and reliant on each other for your true fulfillment. So, make sure you are in the 5%....make your rudder (goals) and steer yourself in a purposeful direction.
