As we step into this weekend I’d like to reflect on this past one when I had the pleasure of celebrating an incredible milestone of my Aunt Marilyn, affectionately known as TEE.

She was honored by Tulane University by dedicating a floor, called the TRAILBLAZER floor, in the School of Social Work building. Tulane also commissioned a painting by the awarding winning artist Terrance Osborne.

Marilyn S. Piper Riley, a New Orleans native, earned an undergraduate degree in Sociology from Dillard University. Her goal to receive a Masters in Social Work led her to Atlanta, Georgia. She had to matriculate in another state because at the time the only university in New Orleans offering the program was Tulane University and they did not admit Black students. Piper Riley completed
one vear toward her
Master's, before returning to New Orleans. When Tulane University opened its doors to Black students in 1963. Piper was one of the first four Blacks to enroll. In 1963, history was made when she earned a Master's of Social Work, becoming one of the first two Black students to graduate from Tulane.

My Aunt went on to be the first Black Administrative Social Worker on the Louisiana State Office level and the first Director of Louisiana's first Child Protection Center. For several years she served as adjunct faculty at Tulane University and Southern University of New Orleans.

The broad reach of her works will remain for many generations to come. It’s fitting for her to be honored as a trailblazer because her legacy will be known for the tracks she continues to leave! Her impact has reach other far and wide, but most importantly she’s left an indelible impression on ME!
