And that unusual name? The landscape was dramatically changed by logging and fires years ago. Old tree stumps covered in moss reportedly resembled gravestones scattered across the valley, helping inspire the name “Graveyard Fields.”

Sitting at 5,720 feet, Devil’s Courthouse is one of those places where a relatively short hike delivers a HUGE reward.
🥾 Hike: About 1 mile round trip
🔥 Difficulty: Short but steep!
⛰️ Elevation: 5,720 feet
🌄 Reward: Nearly 360° panoramic mountain views
On a clear day, you may be able to see across North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee from the overlook. ❤️
And with its high elevation, this is also one of those places to watch EARLY when chasing fall color along the Blue Ridge Parkway. 🍁 Higher elevations usually begin changing before the valleys below, so the scenery can look completely different just a few weeks apart.
🍂 FALL TIP: Temperatures up here can be much cooler than in Waynesville, so bring a layer—even when the valley feels warm.

🐻😳 Imagine stopping for a quick restroom break at Cades Cove… and THIS is who you find nearby! 😍🌲

One of the things that makes Cades Cove so incredible is that you truly never know what you might see. This beautiful black bear was spotted in the creek near the picnic area — just going about its morning in the Smokies. ❤️🐻

📍 Cades Cove | Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Cades Cove is one of the most popular places in the Smokies for wildlife viewing, with opportunities to see black bears, white-tailed deer, wild turkeys and other wildlife surrounded by some of the most beautiful mountain scenery.

But sightings like this are also a great reminder:

🐻 These are wild animals. If you encounter a bear, give it plenty of space, never approach or feed it, and use your camera zoom to get those amazing photos. If a bear is close to a restroom, trail or picnic area, don't try to pass closely just to get where you're going.
