Unfortunately, we have experienced this same situation. Because the amounts were smaller, our attorneys advised us to not incur the expense of suing the contractor. So, we were ONLY :( shorted several thousand dollars instead of tens of thousands of dollars. We hope that a precedent will be set that regularly penalizes contractors who "walk away" from jobs when they are not complete. They are supposed to be the professionals and should know how to estimate properly. If they get it wrong, we can see an allowance of some pre-determined variance, but if it exceeds that amount, the contractor should just suck it up, do a good job and learn from his/her mistake for the next time.

Also, if you haven't changed your HVAC filter recently, do it now! Depending on the filter, you should probably change it every 1-3 months.

Yes, it makes a difference. A dirty filter causes the unit to run longer and harder meaning that it costs you REAL money now, and it wears out the unit faster, costing you thousands later!
