🚩 HOUSE HUNTING? DON’T IGNORE THESE WARNING SIGNS…
Most homes show their best side during a showing. The challenge is spotting what might be hiding behind the staging.
Here are six things that always make me take a closer look:
⚠️ A single room that looks noticeably newer than the rest of the house. Fresh paint isn’t a problem. But when one room has clearly been updated while everything around it feels untouched, it’s worth asking what prompted the work.
⚠️ Strong fragrances throughout the home
If every room has candles, plug-ins, diffusers, or scent machines running, don’t just notice the smell—wonder what’s being covered up.
⚠️ Rugs where rugs don’t belong
An area rug in a living room is normal. A rug covering part of a kitchen, hallway, or entryway deserves a second look. See what’s underneath.
⚠️ Furniture that conveniently blocks certain walls. When large furniture is positioned in unusual ways, pay attention. Sometimes it’s decorating. Sometimes it’s distracting your eye from something else.
⚠️ Signs the home is constantly fighting moisture. A basement dehumidifier working overtime, damp smells, condensation, or water staining are all clues that deserve further investigation.
⚠️ “We’ll fix that later” systems: if the HVAC, pool equipment, hot tub, irrigation system, or another major component isn’t operational during your visit, make sure you get answers before moving forward.
The goal isn’t to assume the worst.
The goal is to stay curious.
Every home has a story. The buyers who ask the right questions are usually the ones who avoid the most expensive surprises.
