The future of the Foothills shopping center (IGA and adjacent businesses) is in jeopardy by its aging septic system. According to the recent articles in the Smoke Signals and the Pickens County Progress, if this issue stays on the course it is going it would be a major blow to the livelihood of the community of Marble Hill. This would have negative effects on the home values and the quality of life for Big Canoe homeowners and Marble Hill residents.
According to the front-page article in the May edition of the Smoke Signals, Wayne Tidwell writes, “Without an adequate sewer solution, the Foothills shopping center would be required to shut down, creating what Downing (owner of the IGA) called a disaster to the community. And with approximately 125 to 150 jobs at stake and about $1 million in taxes coming out of the center, he appears to be correct.”
The Pickens County Commissioners have tabled the vote to address the situation until after the special election to replace outgoing commissar post #2 Becky Denney. The election will be held on May 24h, however early voting is available now.
