A few days ago, I put a door on a plastic shed.
That sentence sounds ridiculous even as I write it.
A year ago, I wouldn't have thought twice about it. Lately? It felt like climbing Everest.
The door had been off its hinge for months. I walked past it daily, thinking, "I need to fix that."
I struggled with it far longer than I'd like to admit. Pulling out tools I thought would help me pop this bolt/hinge onto the piece that allows the door to swing. Sweat soaking my clothes and rolling down my face. Eventually, I figured it out! A complete “DUH” moment.
I’m gonna get this door on finally!
Just as I was trying to get the door in place, it started pouring rain. I got soaked. But I got the damn door on the shed.
I stood there looking at it longer than any reasonable person should. Not because I was proud of the door, but because it reminded me of something.
Normally, I would have called my ex-husband to fix it. I didn’t. That mattered more than the door.
The last 18 months brought things I never saw coming—divorce, health challenges, emotional struggles, financial issues, and trying to get my home sold. There were days when even small tasks felt impossible. Days when every little thing seemed so damn hard.
But confidence doesn’t return all at once. It comes back in tiny pieces.
A procrastinated phone call.
A dog walk.
A conversation.
A shower.
A completed task.
A shed door.
We often think confidence comes first, then action follows. I’ve found it’s the opposite. Action creates evidence. Evidence rebuilds confidence.
And sometimes, progress isn’t glamorous. Sometimes it’s sweaty. Sometimes it’s just putting a door on a shed in the rain.
And honestly? Some days, that’s enough.
