Before I go any further, I know what some of you are thinking: “Brian wrote a children’s book?”
Trust me—I didn’t see that coming either.
“Honey Badger Has a Heart” began with watching my 7-year-old explore his world with an incredible zeal for life.
I started noticing that the very same qualities that can test a parent’s patience are often the ones that make childhood so joyful: boundless energy, curiosity, fearlessness, determination, mischief—and an enormous capacity for love.
Challenging and wonderful can both be true at the same time.
I wanted this book to do more than tell a funny story. Too often, children are given labels—“too loud,” “too wild,” “too stubborn,” or simply “too much.” Over time, those labels can begin to define how other people see them and, eventually, how they see themselves.
“Honey Badger Has a Heart” celebrates the many sides of a child’s personality: the wildness and the tenderness, the independence and the connection, the chaos and the very big heart behind it all.
To me, the honey badger is a fitting spirit animal for Gen Alpha—bold, determined, curious, and ready to take on the world. I’m excited to have a front-row seat as this generation begins shaping the future around them.
Being a parent is a blessing. Capturing a little of your child’s spirit in a book feels like bottling lightning—preserving this remarkable version of them for the long term.
Creating art is fun. Releasing it into the world and sharing the story behind it is exciting, vulnerable, and incredibly rewarding.
