This is an opportunity for us to reflect not only on the theme, “A Century of Black History Commemorations,” but also on how Cortland is one of countless organizations whose members are connected to the history this month celebrates.

This month, we’re highlighting six of our associates who shared their relation to a Black history maker — from prolific and award‑winning musicians Billy Strayhorn and Oscar Sheppard, to historic baseball player Dennis “Bose” Biddler, to Dr. Edwin A. Thompson, founder of Atlanta Metropolitan State College, and to William Still, an abolitionist credited as the father and primary architect of the Underground Railroad.

There's nothing better than starting off the year with a sense of calm and clarity. This inspired our winter art installation at our Community Support Center in Atlanta. It serves as a visual deep-breath, allowing viewers to take some time and observe the natural beauty of art and slow down.

We currently have the work of artist Sensei Elliston Roshi on display with the help of KAI LIN ART. Elliston, who is currently an Abbot of the Atlanta Soto Zen Center, explores the Taoist and Zen ideals of harmony in action. By surrendering to the medium, he allows "inevitable accidents" to reveal the beauty of the natural laws all around us.

The usage of sumi ink, which is traditional in the use of Zen artistry, works together with the water-based pigments and how it presents itself on different materials like paper, plastic, and painted board.

Kai Lin's art serves as a reminder to take a moment, and make time for peace away from rush of the world.

As we near the end of 2025, we are taking a moment to reflect on the past year that has been filled with above-and-beyond moments for our residents and our team. We are proud to know our communities feel like home to so many because of the dedication of our associates and the presence of our incredible residents.

September at Cortland culminated in three days of our teams growing together and playing as a team at our bi-annual conference, Cortland Prime.

Associates from across the country gathered to reconnect with each other, gain invaluable insights from our own leaders as well as inspirational keynote speakers, compete against each other in the Battle of the Cortland Stars, and celebrate Cortland's 20th anniversary.

Cortland Prime is a testament to what is at the core of our company's culture: a group of skilled, talented, and dedicated individuals who come together to turn a vision into a reality and support each other every step of the way. We could not be more grateful to our volunteers who transformed empty ballrooms and lobbies into memorable experiences, to our speakers for the time they spent distilling their knowledge into meaningful presentations that left our associates feeling empowered, and to our teams who remained home to continue providing the best possible experience to our residents and guests.
