Claims for unemployment spiked last month, unexpectedly. Unfortunately, the FED views this with ambivalence: nobody wants people to be out of work, but higher unemployment reduces consumer spending, the biggest engine driving inflation. Maybe the FED and bond markets will see this spike and begin to moderate interest rate increases so mortgage rates can begin to ease this summer. As bond prices increase, the fixed interest rate on the face value of those bonds decreases relative to the higher market price.
