This row of 1901 Victorians a block from the Cape Fear River in Wilmington, NC, was slated for demolition in the 1970s. Fortunately, someone rescued them, and today they represent the awkward, meaningful cycle of rehabilitation and obsolescence. The one on the right is an AirBnB. The one in the middle belongs to a hobbyist who gives it just enough attention to keep his permits alive.

My mind wandered on our walk today (my mind & I rarely walk alone), and I caught myself counting the number of times I’ve helped a total stranger buy or sell a house in the past 15 years, and using all my fingers and toes, came up with… zero. Not since I was a baby agent in Galveston have I worked with somebody with more than 2 degrees of separation. Every single one of my clients has been someone I know or someone someone I know knows. And boy, do I like it that way. So much less drama.
