Sharing from the Broome County Office for Aging :
STAR (School Tax Relief) Programs are now handled by New York State Department of Taxation & Finance.
To be eligible for Enhanced Star you must turn 65 by December 31, 2026 and have a maximum adjusted gross income of 110,750 or less for 2024.
If you do not file income taxes, you will receive a letter from the state requiring you to verify your income within 45 days of the letter (the date will be printed on your letter.) This must be done either online or over the phone.
NYS Department of Taxation & Finance will be doing outreach events throughout the state and will be in Broome County on Wednesday, January 14 from 10am-2pm at the Broome West Senior Center, located at 2801 Wayne St. Endwell to assist homeowners who received a letter requesting income verification for their STAR benefit.
Staff from the state will be present to assist homeowners with completing their income worksheets.
To register for this event please call the Broome West Senior Center at 607-785-1777. You will need to bring documentation of all 2024 income for all resident owners and spouses who reside at the property.
For the Senior Citizens Low Income Tax Exemption, you must be 65 by March 1st and applications are due to your local tax assessor by March 1. For information, income limits (vary by municipality) and to apply for the Senior Citizens Low Income Tax Exemption, please contact your local assessor.
If you are unable to attend the outreach event being held by New York State and need assistance please call Office for Aging at 607-778-2411 and ask to speak to a Caseworker.
