Looks like we picked up a new field inspector at this Forest Service project. Found this little guy beside a corner we set last week, and he stayed there the whole time supervising the crew and making sure our work met his standards.

Precision Above and Below the Waterline

Allegheny Surveys, Inc. continues to provide advanced bathymetric and hydrographic surveying services utilizing the Seafloor Systems HyDroneTM Platform to support engineering, environmental, infrastructure, and construction projects throughout the region.

Our hydrographic survey capabilities allow us to efficiently collect accurate underwater elevation and terrain data in environments where conventional survey methods may be difficult, unsafe, or inefficient.

Applications include:
• Reservoirs, ponds, and lakes
• Stormwater and retention basins
• Sediment and siltation evaluations
• Dredging and sediment volume calculations
• Dam, levee, and spillway inspections
• Mining and industrial facilities
• Environmental and remediation projects
• Infrastructure and construction support

By combining sonar-based depth measurements, GNSS positioning, and advanced geospatial processing workflows, our team is able to efficiently collect high-density underwater terrain data while improving safety, efficiency, and overall project decision-making.

From shoreline to subsurface, Allegheny Surveys continues to deliver dependable geospatial solutions throughout the region.

Congratulations to the newly elected officers of the WVSPS!

New officers were announced during the 58th Annual Convention held April 16–18, 2026 at the Oglebay Resort in Wheeling, West Virginia. The event brought together professionals from across the state and region for valuable continuing education and industry insight.

A special moment marked this year’s convention as former President Dwayne Hall, PS proudly handed the gavel to Doug Bell, ushering in the 2026–2027 term with excitement and momentum.

We’re proud to recognize the incoming leadership:
• President Elect: David Chesnut
• Vice President: Mack McCarty
• Directors: Jason Smithson, Lloyd Kirk, and Paul Hicks

Wishing each of you a successful term as you help lead and strengthen the surveying profession in West Virginia.

50+ year-old plans. Tight access window. Zero room for error.

In December 2025, Allegheny Surveys teamed with Alpha Associates to support upgrades to West Virginia University PRT system.

With legacy drawings that didn’t fully reflect field conditions, we used 3D terrestrial laser scanning to capture the structure as it exists today—creating a precise digital model for reverse engineering.

All data collection was completed during a short winter shutdown, ensuring the new section will fit exactly as designed.

Fast mobilization. High accuracy. Real-world results.

Fun Fact Friday: Topographic Surveys Reveal What the Eye Can’t See

A topographic survey doesn’t just map the ground surface — it captures the story of how water flows, how structures fit the land, and where potential challenges exist before construction even begins.

Modern topo surveys can locate:
- subtle elevation changes of just a few hundredths of a foot
- drainage patterns that impact stormwater design
- existing features like utilities, curbs, structures, and terrain breaks
- vegetation limits and ground conditions

Using GNSS, robotic total stations, LiDAR scanning, and drone photogrammetry, surveyors create highly detailed digital terrain models that engineers rely on to design everything from roadways to industrial sites.

Good design starts with good data — and topo surveys provide the foundation.
