🚨 RENTAL SCAM ALERT: DON’T GET RIPPED OFF! 🚨
We’ve seen a massive spike in rental scams lately, and innocent people are losing hard-earned money to these low-life scammers. Here is how they operate and how to protect yourself:
⚠️ How the Scam Works
Stolen Pictures: Scammers take real photos from legitimate real estate or rental listings.
Fake Social Media Listings: They post these properties on Facebook Marketplace, local groups, or other social platforms at unbeatable prices.
Cash Demands: They will demand cash, wire transfers, Zelle, Venmo, or gift cards before you ever step foot inside or sign a valid lease.
🛡️ How to Protect Yourself
NEVER pay money upfront. Do not hand over application fees, deposits, or rent without viewing the inside of the home and verifying the owner/agent.
Go through a licensed AGENCY. Always deal with verified property management companies or licensed real estate agents.
Skip renting off Facebook direct messages. If someone is refusing to meet in person, claiming they are "out of the country," or pushing you to deal strictly through social media messaging, it’s a scam.
Verify before you send anything. If a deal seems too good to be true, it almost certainly is.
