Here’s an important distinction. Roof trusses are comprised of southern yellow pine, while house framing is typically spruce pine fir. Different wood species have different capacities (modulus of elasticity, shear, bending, etc). The truss has less crushing potential than the wall due to the difference in wood species. Most assume the minimum input bearing area for the roof truss is the total control for crushing, when in fact it only governs what is required to keep the truss from crushing beneath its own weight.

In a three-story house, the first floor stays cold because it has more duct resistance.
