⚓️ Navigation lights or docking lights?

Memorial Day Weekend 🇺🇸 is here in the Finger Lakes and while the weather forecast might not be the best, boat traffic is sure to pick up.

And that means more boats with their headlights on after sunset.

While this article isn’t referencing NYS, it’s the rule of the water nonetheless.

https://lakemartinboaters.com/2023/03/09/docking-lights-are-not-headlights/

Stay safe out there and cheers to getting out on the lake!

Whats the big deal with docking lights? It’s all about night vision. Boaters should be aware that docking lights are not head lights and should only be used when you are approaching a dock.

Lakeshore Neighbors, this might be a good opportunity to learn what can be planted on your shorelines to mitigate shoreline erosion.

If you haven't been to The Plantsmen Nursery give them a visit - tons of great native plants, trees and flowers.

🌱 Save your spot for our Lake Friendly Living Awareness Month event!

Join the Cayuga Lake Watershed Network, The History Center in Tompkins County, and The Plantsmen Nursery for a special morning exploring how native plants can help protect and strengthen our watershed.

🌼 Learn which native species are best suited for:
Rain gardens
Shoreline buffers
Pollinator habitat
Climate-resilient landscapes & more!

We’ll also share how today’s lake-friendly actions build on generations of care for Cayuga Lake and its watershed.

📍 The Plantsmen Nursery, Groton
📅 Saturday, May 30

Due to elevated water levels on Seneca Lake, combined with continued wind-driven wave action, shoreline erosion and dock damage remain serious risks across the region. The New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services has offered to come as soon as tomorrow to inspect damage, and they need addresses to review. Even with a short delay requested, residents must report damage now so locations can be included.

If your property has been impacted, please email your address, a brief description of the damage, and photos if possible to your county, and copy us on the email:

Schuyler County: [email protected]
Ontario County: [email protected]
Seneca County: [email protected]
Yates County: [email protected]
Copy: [email protected]

This information will directly support coordination with state officials and help ensure impacted areas are assessed. The faster damage is reported, the faster support can be brought to the region. Please share immediately!

** No Wake Advisory – No Wake Zones within 500 feet of shore **
Location: Cross Lake, the Seneca River, and all of our area lakes and waterways where levels are high.
Due to the recent rainfall Cross Lake, the Seneca River, and other area waterways remain at high levels. Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck is advising that a “no wake zone” be observed within 500 feet of shore when boating.
Boaters should also be aware of floating debris and hazards in the water that may not be visible from the surface.
Anyone boating on Cross Lake, the Seneca River, or any of our lakes and waterways should respect a no wake zone within 500 feet of shore, especially when water levels are high due to the potential for shore damage.
