Not all concrete joint sealants behave the same, and choosing the right material matters.

Self leveling sealants flow into the joint and create a smooth finish. They can work well on relatively flat surfaces, but slopes may cause the material to move or settle unevenly.

Thicker sealants stay where they are placed and provide more control during application. This makes them useful for sloped surfaces, vertical transitions, or areas where the finished shape needs to be worked by hand.

Before selecting a material, consider:
• The slope of the concrete
• The width and depth of the joint
• Expected concrete movement
• Water exposure
• The desired finished appearance

Control joints are designed to help manage where concrete cracks as it expands, contracts, and moves. Properly cleaning and sealing these joints can help limit water intrusion and protect the joint edges from additional deterioration.
The best repair is not about using one product everywhere. It is about matching the material to the conditions.

There’s something timeless about the Boy Scout motto: Be prepared.

Snow and ice are on the way, and open cracks can let water in, freeze, expand, and make the damage worse over winter.

If you have cracks you have been meaning to take care of, now is a good time to get them sealed.

The Cat's Meow

Wait for it.....

This expansion joint is about 20 feet long. The first 10 feet still contain the original 2x4. The remaining 10 feet have been filled and camouflaged to blend with the surrounding concrete.

The difference is pretty clear once the old material is replaced with a proper repair.

The best part of this repair had nothing to do with concrete.

While I was finishing the expansion joint, my daughter rolled up on her skateboard to see what I was working on. For a few minutes, an ordinary job became one of those small moments I’ll be glad I captured.

The repair turned out well, but she made the video worth keeping.

In Part 1, I filled this expansion joint with new material.

Now it’s time to clean up the surrounding concrete and blend the repair so it looks more natural with the driveway.

The filling is important, but the cleanup and finishing work are what make the repair look complete.

Part 3 is next, featuring a special visitor who stopped by to inspect the work.

Moving into a new house starts with an empty space.

Then everything begins finding its place. The couch finds its wall. The dishes find their cabinet. Slowly, the empty space starts feeling like home.

Filling a properly prepared expansion joint feels surprisingly similar.

The old material has been removed, the joint has been cleaned, and now the new fill can move in and settle exactly where it belongs.

It is move in day for this expansion joint.

This is part one of a three part story.

Next, the new tenant gets cleaned up and tries to blend into the neighborhood.

Have you ever cleaned out a closet and briefly wondered why you started?

For a while, everything looks worse. Clothes are everywhere, the shelves are empty, and the mess has somehow doubled.

Then comes the satisfying part. Everything goes back clean, organized, and exactly where it belongs.

That is what this stage of concrete repair feels like.

The grinding and cleaning created the mess. Now the prepared cracks are being filled, the lines are coming together, and the patio is starting to look finished again.

The final result may get the attention, but it only looks this orderly because of the preparation underneath it.
