Like Mary Poppins 🌂☂️, I know when it is time for me to go. 🙋🏼‍♀️

My client’s health declined 📉 to the point where his ability to live alone👴🏼 is sadly coming to an end. After a year and a half of detailed work, the family has all the tools they need now to manage his affairs. All the messes cleaned up. His financial world organized both on paper and digitally.

I’m happy he and I accomplished what we set out to do. I’ll stay in touch of course, but my heart ♥️ aches.

🤯 COOKING AT HOME COULD REDUCE DEMENTIA RISK?

A study in Japan of 11,000 adults 65 and older who were followed for 6 years revealed the following results:

Cooking at home benefits -
🍎 People tend to eat more fruits and veggies when cooking for themselves.
🍍 They eat less processed foods.
🛒 Shopping for groceries (daily step count) and meal preparation (think standing, peeling veggies, lifting, etc) are sources of exercise.
🧠 Cognitive benefits from things like trying out a new kitchen tool to learning a new cooking technique.

Study conclusions -
🍳 Generally - "At the study’s conclusion, researchers found that cooking a meal from scratch at home was associated with a 23% lower dementia risk among male participants and a 27% lower risk among female participants...

🥗 If you aren't a great cook - Additionally, scientists discovered that for study participants with few cooking skills, cooking a meal at home at least once a week was correlated with a 67% reduction in their dementia risk."

A new study suggests that cooking just one meal at home per week can reduce dementia risk in older people by up to 67%.

New scam alert from The New York Times -

“Phishing scams involve “two distinct paths,” Ms. Tobac added. In one, the recipient is served a link that turns out to be dead, or so it seems. A click activates malware that runs silently as it gleans passwords and other bits of personal information….

“Another scam offers a working link. Potential victims who click on it are asked to provide a password. Those who take that next step are a boon to hackers.”

“They have complete control of your email and, in turn, your entire digital life,” Ms. Tobac said. “They can reset your password for your dog’s Instagram account. They can take over your bank account. Change your health insurance.”

Hackers are spoofing Paperless Post, Evite and Punchbowl to creep into your hard drive.

🎁 Need a gift for a parent or grandparent in your life?

When my mom began the pot burning 🔥 phase of her life while living in her house, I knew I needed help. I lived in North Carolina and she in Michigan. She would turn on a kettle or pot of water💧on the stove and then walk 💃🏻 away to another room or outside in her garden 🪴. The five minutes to do “just this one thing” took longer as she found even more things to do. Before long she forgot the stove was on. The water evaporated and luckily (on both occasions) she came back into the kitchen in the nick of time 😅 to another burned pot or kettle. My mom refused to get a caregiver - “What are they going to do for me besides boil water??!”🤬

🤷🏼‍♀️ She was independent in all other aspects ie driving, email, bill payments, socially, etc. Looking back it was about 2 or 3 years before she really needed on-site help.

👉🏼Enter this little gadget - a lighted electric kettle with automatic shut off. The entire bottom illuminates so my mom could see it was on from across the room. If she left the kitchen, it shut off automatically once the water reached the boiling 🥵 point. Cleaning was a snap 🫰. A bit of vinegar every so often and it’s done. ✅

My mom LOVED 🥰 this kettle. I felt like a super hero 🦸‍♀️.

Isreali based IT security firm “Guardio points out that “Americans lost over $432 million to in 2024, and experts predict 2025 will shatter that record as AI-powered attacks reach unprecedented sophistication.” is highlighted again, alongside other major brands, including , , , and .

The latest wave of attacks use AI as never before, “which means perfect grammar, professional designs, and convincing copy that makes traditional ‘red flags’ obsolete. The old advice to ‘look for spelling errors’ or ‘check for poor formatting.’ That’s ancient history. AI has eliminated those telltale signs.”

🥺According to Guardio, "The most common trap is the urgent account alert. You receive a text claiming your Amazon account has been ‘suspended due to suspicious activity’ or your Verizon bill ‘couldn’t be processed’ and you need to ‘verify your information immediately’ by clicking a link’."

👉🏼Amazon’s security advice is now front and center. “To securely sign in to your Amazon account you can enable a passkey to simply use your face, fingerprint, or the PIN that you use to unlock your device. are a convenient and secure way to sign in to your Amazon account without using a password.”

Look out for these messages on your phone and check your account settings now.

“Morning George!”

“Good morning Sunshine!”🌞

Meeting him in the kitchen. I pointed at both my ears👂🏼 “Do you have your hearing aids in?”

He nodded saying nothing, bowed his head, & then pointed at his mouth. “Ah ok. You don’t have your teeth 🦷 in yet,” I noted. “That’s ok.”

I began to pull out my laptop 💻 , notebook 📒, the to do list ✅ from my last visit a few weeks prior & the tax return paperwork his accountant had sent me for his signature. (Technologies like Docusign are hit / miss with my clients.)

“I need your help with something,” he said his voice breaking. George had tears in his eyes 😢. “I think I lost my teeth at the grocery store.”

Me - “When?”

George - “Monday.”

Me - “Today is Thursday! Have you been able to eat 🍇 anything?” I opened the refrigerator & scanned mostly empty shelves.

George - “Nevermind that. I either need to find them or I need to get new ones. My kids are going to kill me. I leave for New York Monday.”

Me - “Why do you think you lost them at the grocery store?”

George - “I was in the dairy 🥛 section. I remember my teeth 🦷 were hurting me while I was talking to the lady stocking the refrigerator. I think I took them out, set them on the shelf and forgot them there. I can’t remember seeing them after that.”

Me - “What do you normally do when you take your teeth out & you are not at home?”

George - “I put them in my pocket.”

Me - “What have you been working on this week?”

George - “Working with Mario fixing the fence.”

What I knew -
1. George had checked his pants pockets, his car, & everywhere else he could think of.
2. George is a gentleman. He makes his bed everyday. Everything in his home has its place. Dresses to perfection with his shoes shined. George would never take his teeth out when someone was watching him.
3. George had all of his teeth pulled at an earlier age than most people. He’s had dentures for decades. Long enough to have habits around their care.
4. Long term memory stays with us as our brain 🧠 ages whereas short term memory gets tricky. Long term memory is aided by habits. As Charles Duhigg noted in his book 📕 The Power of Habit, an example of how a habit helps long term memory is when a man with brain damage who walks out of the house can make his way back home (a home he’d lived in for 50 years), but not be able to remember he had gone for a walk already that morning.

👉🏼 I moved through the house to find George’s rollator walker & looked into the front pouch. I pulled out an assortment of tools 🛠️. His dentures were at the bottom safely stored in a small clear food container that would have been hard to see against the black fabric of the pouch. The distinction between his pants pocket or his rollator pouch, didn’t matter. George is a creature of habit.
