“Let’s go push some cattle.”
And just like that, a random Wednesday in Buffalo, Wyoming, became a return to my roots.
A short drive from historic downtown Buffalo, beneath the wide open skies of the American West, lies the TA Ranch; a three generation, family owned and operated cattle ranch built on something far greater than land alone.
Three generations of caring for the land so the land can care for them.
Three generations of thoughtfully developing their cattle bloodlines.
Three generations of hard-earned wisdom, passed down through early mornings, long days, shared meals, and an unwavering respect for the animals in their care.
I had the privilege of spending the day alongside the family behind the TA Ranch. And what stayed with me most was the intention woven into everything they do. From raising cattle and stewarding the land to sourcing food from the ranch and welcoming guests from around the world, this family doesn’t simply preserve the spirit of the West, they live it.
Growing up with a ranching background, I felt as though I had stepped back into a familiar chapter of my own story. The cowboy bunkhouses. The cookhouse where every meal is homemade and shared around the same table. The quiet understanding that everyone has a role, and every role matters.
Out on the cattle drive, third generation cowgirl Katie noticed a bull that didn’t belong with the herd. Separating him required more than horsemanship. It demanded patience, instinct, quick thinking, and the courage to make the right decision before the situation turned.
Katie handled it with the kind of grit that cannot be taught in a day. It is earned through years in the saddle and generations of knowledge passed down before her.
Later, as we gathered in the cookhouse for supper, I overheard her grandfather speak with admiration about what had happened. He may not have known exactly what Katie was doing in the moment, but he trusted her judgment. Her judgement was passed down from him.
And perhaps that is the heart of a generational ranch: teaching the next generation everything you know, then trusting them to carry it forward in their own way.
This is only a glimpse into cattle ranching at the TA Ranch. The people, heritage, and heart that continue to shape this extraordinary piece of Buffalo, Wyoming.
The story of the TA Ranch is just beginning. Stay tuned. 🤠🐂
Save this reel if the spirit of the American West speaks to you, and share it with someone who belongs beneath a Wyoming sky.
