Keep your home safe during a showing

“Never let a stranger into your home” is a rule ingrained in most people since childhood. And if you’re selling your home for the first time, you may be wary of having showings when you’re not there. However, showings are key to selling your home. Here are some things you should keep in mind so you can allow showings confidently.
Open blinds and curtains

Before your showing, open your blinds and curtains, and turn on all the lights in your home. Taking these precautions can help prevent criminal activity or a breakin.
Hide personal belongings, including loose mail

Also, keep all of your personal belongings stored away while your house is listed. Items like mail may initially seem harmless to leave out, but even “junk mail” could contain more information than you’re willing to share with prospective buyers. Take extra caution if your bank regularly mails your statements, or if you recently made a large purchase. Don’t risk it; hide any loose mail before a showing.
Double-check all doors are locked

This may seem like a common practice, but ensuring doors are locked after showings is crucial to keeping your home secure. This can prevent undercover thieves from unlocking a door during a showing with the goal of breaking in later. Make it a habit to check all doors when returning to your house to avoid any scares.

It never hurts to be too careful. If you have questions about home tour safety, talk to your REALTOR®.
