Another successful GPR concrete-scanning project completed by GPIS at Fresh Wash Laundry LLC in South Chicago, Illinois.

Before concrete cutting began, GPIS scanned the designated floor area and identified:

โœ… Three conduit paths at approximately 5 inches below the surface
โœ… 6-by-6 wire mesh approximately 3 inches below the surface
โœ… Concrete thickness ranging from approximately 4.5 to 5 inches

Each conduit path was traced and clearly marked directly on the concrete. A minimum 3-inch safety clearance was established around all conduit markings to help the cutting contractor avoid costly damage, electrical hazards, and project delays.

Know whatโ€™s inside the concrete before you cut, core, or drill.

Todayโ€™s project in Winnetka, Illinois:

GPIS performed GPR concrete scanning of a residential garage floor to assist with planning the installation of a new car lift.

This was not a standard concrete slab. The floor consisted of a reinforced concrete wear slab, sloped topping, waterproofing, and prestressed hollow-core plank over a finished basement.

We scanned from both the garage surface and the basement underside to:

โ€ข Map reinforcing steel
โ€ข Identify the hollow-core layout
โ€ข Interpret the prestressing strand pattern
โ€ข Compare the proposed lift location with the existing lift area
โ€ข Document the slab assembly and approximate depths

The results provide the structural engineer and lift installer with valuable information for evaluating the lift location and anchorage requirements.

Scan before you drill, cut, or anchor.

๐Ÿ” GPR CONCRETE SCANNING | JEWEL-OSCO โ€“ SOUTH HOLLAND, IL

Another detailed concrete investigation completed by GPIS Concrete Scanning & Imaging, this time for Cushing Terrell Mechanical Engineers at the Jewel-Osco facility in South Holland, Illinois.

The purpose of this scan was different from a typical saw-cut or core-drilling layout. The engineering team needed accurate information about the existing floor construction to help evaluate the slab for new mechanical equipment.

Using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), GPIS mapped and physically marked the existing precast floor system, identifying:

๐Ÿ”น Precast panel locations and panel joints
๐Ÿ”น Hollow-core locations and centerlines
๐Ÿ”น Prestressed/high-tensile reinforcement
๐Ÿ”น Wire-mesh reinforcement within the topping slab
๐Ÿ”น Approximate reinforcement depths
๐Ÿ”น Topping slab and precast panel configuration
๐Ÿ”น Overall floor-system thickness

The scan identified approximately 8" precast panels with a 1ยฝ"โ€“2" topping slab, producing an overall floor thickness of approximately 9ยฝ"โ€“10" in the investigated areas.

Because this information was being collected for structural/mechanical engineering evaluation rather than cutting or coring, detailed field markings were placed directly on the floor so the engineers could clearly see how the existing precast system was constructed and where critical internal features were located.

GPR isn't only about finding a safe place to drill. It can also provide valuable information about an existing concrete structure when drawings are limited or field verification is needed.

Know what's in the concrete before making decisions above it.

๐Ÿ‘€ What's hiding beneath your concrete?

Most people look at a concrete floor and see... concrete.

We see electrical conduits feeding an entire building, reinforcing steel holding the structure together, post-tension cables under thousands of pounds of force, plumbing lines, and sometimes surprises that were never shown on the original plans.

One wrong cut can shut down a business, damage expensive equipment, delay a project, or worseโ€”injure someone.

That's why we do what we do.

At GPIS Concrete Scanning & Imaging, every scan is about giving contractors the confidence to make the first cut safely. We turn the unknown into a clear plan before the saw ever touches the concrete.

โ“What's the strangest thing you've ever found hidden inside a wall or concrete slab? Tell us in the commentsโ€”we've seen some interesting ones over the years.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Happy 4th of July from GPIS Ground Penetrating Radar Imaging Solutions! ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ
Today we celebrate 250 years of American independence and the freedoms that make this country great. While you're enjoying fireworks, cookouts, and time with family and friends, we also want to recognize something that's just as importantโ€”making it home safely.
At GPIS, safety is at the heart of everything we do. Before concrete is cut, cored, or drilled, we help contractors locate hidden rebar, post-tension cables, conduit, and other embedded hazards using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR). Every scan helps reduce risk, prevent costly damage, and most importantly, protect the people on the job.
The same reason we work safely is the same reason we celebrate todayโ€”to get home to the people who matter most.
Have a safe, fun, and memorable Independence Day!

Another successful project completed by GPIS Concrete Scanning & Imaging! โœ…

Today we were on-site at the future COFI Coffee & Bakery, coming soon to 939 W. Washington Blvd., Chicago, Illinois.

Before core drilling and construction work could begin, we performed a comprehensive Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) scan of the concrete slab to identify existing reinforcing steel and electrical conduit hidden beneath the surface.

Using our color-coded marking system:
๐Ÿ”ต Blue = Top Rebar
๐ŸŸก Yellow = Bottom Rebar
๐Ÿ”ด Red = Electrical Conduit (Danger โ€“ Avoid)

Each embedded item was clearly marked in the field, allowing the contractor to safely plan drilling locations while maintaining a minimum 2-inch clearance from all identified hazards.

It's always exciting to be part of projects that will soon serve our local communities. We appreciate the opportunity to help make this new coffee shop safer before construction moves forward.
