I heard a quote from Ashton Kutcher a few months ago that I keep returning to:

“I believe that opportunity looks a lot like hard work.”

Maybe I keep thinking of it because I need the reminder. Maybe because I’m in the middle of the hard work and hoping the opportunities follow.

This transition into real estate has required a lot of work.

Most days, I genuinely believe I’m going to make this happen.

Every now and then, though, a small voice sneaks in…

“What if it never does?”

So I go back to work.

I make another call. I host another open house. I say yes to meeting the inspector. I write another note I hope someone actually reads. And I try again tomorrow.

Twenty-something Samm would’ve beaten herself up for not squeezing in one more hour. These days, I’m trying to remember that life is a balancing act. Working hard also means knowing when to breathe, spend time with family, and refill the tank so I can come back tomorrow.

Another quote I love is attributed to Seneca:

“Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.”

The fact that these ideas echo one another, even though they’re separated by nearly 2,000 years, only reinforces them for me.

I’ve realized opportunity doesn’t usually announce itself. It shows up quietly through conversations, introductions, timing, and moments that don’t always seem significant.

I also love that the first quote came from Ashton Kutcher.

It’s easy to look at someone like him and assume success just happened for him. Hearing him talk about effort reminded me that inspiration can come from unexpected places, and that we shouldn’t make assumptions about anyone.

Lately, opportunities have started to come my way.

A friend mentioning my name. An experienced agent meeting me for coffee. A top producer sharing her open house formula. A coworker offering to co-list a home on a street that’s meaningful to me.

None of those happened by accident.

They happened because people were generous. Because relationships matter. And because I kept showing up.

I’m grateful for every one of them.

I’ve realized this.

I’m not just grateful for the opportunities.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to do the hard work.

Great idea… terrible name.

“Broken concept.” Who approved that? It sounds like something you’d see on a bad inspection report—which, as any Realtor knows, is enough to make your stomach drop 😂

But I actually kind of love the idea.

After years of everyone wanting one giant room where you cook, watch TV, help with homework, and hear every conversation at once, people are starting to want a bit of separation again.

Think archways, built-ins, partial walls, or glass dividers. You still get light and openness—just with spaces that actually have a purpose. (And maybe, with a little luck, you don’t hear every Insta reel your teen is watching.)

What I’m really loving is that people care less about what’s “in” and more about what actually works for their life.

Because the best floor plan isn’t the trendiest one—it’s the one that fits your life. And we could all use some simplification.

Chris Stapleton at Paycor Sat night.

While we expected the rain, the 2 hour rain delay wasn’t on my bingo card.

John, Gus & I spent the extra time just hanging out - talking, laughing, people-watching. We so rarely have time like that.

Chris Stapleton finally took the stage… and shared that he’d written a brand-new song backstage during the rain delay and was going to play it for us for the very first time.

Pretty incredible reminder that life IS better when you’ve been thru a storm. That’s when you look around at what you’ve got, and appreciate it more.

Apparently I’ll negotiate with just about anyone… even a meditation app.

For almost 4 months, I meditated every day. I was pretty proud of that streak.

Then summer happened.

Scout trips. Baseball. Work. Family. Late nights. Early mornings. One day I simply forgot.

And then… the streak was over.

I’ll admit it—I briefly considered emailing the app to see if they’d restore my streak. It had glitched once before, so maybe I could make a convincing case. 😆

Irony, anyone?

One of the many lessons of meditation is learning to be with reality instead of arguing with it.

I missed a day.

That’s the reality.

Meditation has never been about having a perfect, uninterrupted mind. You get distracted, you notice it, and you gently come back to your breath. No shame. No drama. Just… begin again.

Apparently that lesson applies outside of meditation too. Who knew?

I don’t get to keep my streak. But I do get another chance to practice what I’ve supposedly been learning for the last 120 days: holding things with a little less grip, accepting what is instead of trying to rewrite it, and remembering that starting over isn’t failure—it’s kind of the whole point.

So here I am.

Day 1.

Again.

And honestly, I’m guessing meditation isn’t the only place where I could use a little more practice beginning again.
