Preservation news from Asheville, North Carolina!

GBX Group has announced plans to rehabilitate the historic Flora Sorrell Boarding House in downtown Asheville. In partnership with Buchanan Construction and Carleton Collins Architecture, the project will preserve the building’s historic character while transforming it into 10 boutique hotel suites, honoring its legacy of hospitality for future generations.

The project reflects GBX Group’s ongoing commitment to finding productive uses for historic properties and working with local partners to support the communities around them.

Fresh off the press 📰

Recent media coverage from the Asheville Citizen Times highlights GBX Group’s plans to transform the historic Flora Sorrell Boarding House at 100 Biltmore Avenue into a 10-room boutique hotel.

In partnership with Buchanan Construction and Carleton Collins Architecture, GBX Group is preserving the 115-year-old building’s historic character, including its stone and brick exterior, fireplaces, stairwell and wood floors.

GBX had the pleasure of being a sponsor of Preserve Nashville’s Paint the Town event, bringing together community leaders, preservation advocates, and supporters for an evening celebrating Nashville’s historic places.

The event featured an exciting live auction, meaningful connections, and a celebration of the people and partnerships dedicated to preserving Nashville’s historic character. At this year's NorthCoast 99 Awards, Catherine Zelenkofske, Director of People Operations, accepted GBX's Special Category Award for Total Rewards, recognizing the company's ongoing commitment to creating a workplace where employees are supported, recognized, and rewarded.

As highlighted in GBX's recent press release and the Top of the Charts feature, the award reflects the company's evolving approach to Total Rewards. GBX Group had the honor to sponsor and host the 2026 Legacy Circle Reception Tuesday night during Heritage Ohio's premier preservation and revitalization conference, held in partnership with the State Historic Preservation Office in historic downtown Cincinnati.

Hosted at the historic Mercantile Library, the reception brought preservation professionals and community leaders together for an evening of connection and conversation centered on historic preservation and community revitalization. GBX Group sponsored the 2026 National Preservation Easement Summit in Washington, D.C. last week, bringing together preservationists from across the country for two days of specialized programming. Coordinated with the National Preservation Partners Network, the conference fostered conversations on preservation policy and programs that provide property owners with tools to protect historic places nationwide.

As part of the Summit, GBX’s Seth Unger, Vice President of Government & Public Affairs, joined a panel on federal updates impacting historic preservation easements alongside leaders from the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Office of Congressman Michael Carey. GBX’s Antonin Robert, President of Community Development, moderated the discussion.

During the event, GBX also proudly supported the Preservation Action Foundation Auction by donating the Grand Finale package, which earned the auction's highest bid and featured a stay at GBX's Key West property. The package was made possible with generous contributions from local partners.
