H-clips, also called panel edge clips, help support the unsupported edges of roof sheathing between rafters or trusses. They can reduce deflection, help keep panels aligned, and improve the overall performance of the roof deck.

Per IRC R803.2.2, allowable roof sheathing spans are tied to Table R503.2.1.1(1) and APA E30, which account for panel thickness, span rating, framing spacing, and edge support requirements. IRC R803.2.3 also governs roof sheathing installation.

Important: H-clips are not automatically required on every roof. Whether they are required depends on the sheathing thickness/span rating, framing spacing, manufacturer requirements, and engineered design.

It’s a tiny piece of metal most homeowners will never see—but when required, it plays an important role in keeping the roof deck properly supported.

Do you know what deck ledger flashing is? Put simply, deck ledger flashing is flashing installed underneath building siding and over the ledger board in order to protect the ledgar board and home structure from water infiltration. It's a common miss (in new construction as well) and can be challenging and costly for builders to fix after the fact, as the flashing should lap under the siding material. Did you already know what deck ledger flashing is? If you learned something today, let me know!

What's a shrinkage crack? Bug eyes?

Found this shrinkage crack on my morning run. Yes, this is a commercial building, but this is still a good representation of a shrinkage crack in a foundation wall. Typically, cracks like this are not a reason to be concerned, but here are some other questions to ask yourself when looking at a foundation crack:
- Is the crack wider at the bottom or the top?
- Can you fit a screwdriver in it?
- Is the crack out of plane?

All things to take into consideration when observing concrete cracks on your own home or a home you're considering buying.
