Today we are celebrating America's independence, our hard-won freedom, and the birth of a nation. Beyond the backyard barbecues and festive celebrations, how much do you actually know about the history behind the day?

Here are three fun facts about Independence Day you can share at your cookout today:

🎆 July 4th is not the day we voted for independence: The Continental Congress actually voted to separate from Great Britain on July 2nd.

🎆 John Adams was so sure July 2nd would be the big holiday that he wrote to his wife predicting future generations would celebrate it. July 4th is simply the day the formal document was officially adopted.

🎆 A delayed signing: While the declaration was adopted on July 4, 1776, most signers did not actually put their signatures on the official parchment until August 2, 1776.

🎆 The 250-year milestone: Today is incredibly special. It marks the Semiquincentennial! It is the 250th anniversary of the United States.
