On Veterans Day, we pause to reflect on the courage and sacrifice of our veterans. The red poppy, now a worldwide symbol of remembrance, gained this significance from the poem In Flanders Fields, written in 1915 by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, a Canadian physician and soldier. McCrae was inspired to write it after losing a close friend in battle during World War I. He observed how bright red poppies sprang up across the war-torn fields of Flanders in Belgium, even amid the devastation.

The poppy, growing resiliently in the barren ground, symbolizes the endurance, sacrifice, and memory of those who have served. Today, we wear it as a tribute to their bravery and to the legacy they leave behind. At Blue Jay Getaway, we remember and give thanks to those who protect our freedoms.
