Known as a "proverb" the phrase "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" has roots in ancient strategic thought, they are not the words of a wise man. The earliest recorded iteration appeared in a manual for monarchs covering governance, law, economics, and military strategy, known as "the Arthashastra", by Chanakya (375–283 BC, a teacher, philosopher, economist, and royal advisor in India).
The phrase is not scriptual, in fact a "proverb" is simply a short, well-known statement that expresses a "general" truth, thought to be wisdom, but really is just an observation about life. "The enemy of my enemy....", turns out was not a friend or even an acquaintance. I thought I was playing Chess, nope the enemy only knew Checkers, making the phrase just what it is, a widely used aphorism. Random scripture, 2 Corinthians 12:9

I flew to Florida and spent the majority of today with 90 (an a half) year old John Jacob. Civil Rights Leader and former Executive Vice-President of a Fortune 100 company. He is the 60th Laurel Wreath Awardee: the highest honor granted in "Oh Noble Kappa Alpha Psi". The Laurel Wreath is an ancient Greek symbol of victory, honor, and distinction. Sitting at a country club 5 hour lunch with the man, the myth, the individual who is one (1) honorary doctorate degree short of being able to count those doctorates on ALL fingers and toes. We discussed history, lives, wives, careers, faith, Frat and politics.
