Bridget “Biddy” Mason (1818–1891) was born enslaved—and became one of the first major landowners in Los Angeles.

After suing for her freedom in a landmark 1856 case that declared her family “free forever,” Biddy Mason built wealth through entrepreneurship and early downtown LA real estate, amassing the equivalent of $7.5M today. She reinvested her success into community—founding the First African Methodist Episcopal Church of Los Angeles, supporting working families, and aiding those in need. Her legacy proves that land ownership has always been a pathway to freedom, dignity, and generational impact.
