While I have a much larger project in mind, I wanted to share some photos I have of the finished Clara Barton mural in the mean time. This time I was sure to capture both the mural and Chapter 1 of the American Red Cross on the other end of the street.

I talk with my Urban Design students at Alfred State all the time about how murals are beneficial to small towns. Murals bring more than just a splash of color to a town; they create vibrant, engaging spaces that reflect the community's unique spirit and history. They attract visitors, boosting local businesses and encouraging new investments. By showcasing local stories and heritage, murals instill a sense of pride and unity within the community.

An architect needed a comprehensive view of a property to design new structures. Google maps didn’t identify any of the newer site conditions, such as the pond and barn in the middle of the property. Drones provide the perfect solution, capturing top-down images ideal for this purpose.

It was difficult for me to understand how large this mural actually is until I saw it from this perspective. I’m really looking forward to taking photos when it’s done!

For those unfamiliar, the mural is of Clara Barton, once a resident in Dansville and the founder of the Red Cross. Dansville is the home of the nations first local chapter of the American Red Cross, located just a short walk from the new mural.

Excellent job by the artists so far, and the paint by numbers activity to allow locals to paint portions of the base of the piece was a great civic engagement activity.
