Wondering when to get that last mow in for the year? Grass growth will drastically decrease when temperatures are consistently in the 40-50 degree range. Also, once the first deep frost hits the lawn, it will trigger the lawn to suppress growth and activate cool temperature protocol. That typically means no more growing. The surface temperature will directly impact the soil temperature, which will cause the growing activity to go into reserve mode above ground. During the cooler temps and winter months, the roots will still actively feed the lawn through stored resources. This helps the lawn remain healthy so that come Spring, growth can resume.

Some lawn care techs will say that aeration and dethatching are the same and you only need one or the other. This is not the case. There is a difference. Check out this chart below from www.sodsolutions.com:

FROST WARNING in effect! Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana are all in the frost warning zones. It appears the frost warning timeframe is from 2am-9am Wednesday morning, October 16th.

What does this mean for your lawn? A few things can happen when frost covers the lawn...
❄️cell damage: Ice crystals can form inside the cell wall of the the grass blade, potentially rupturing. This will cause discoloring and wilting.
❄️soil expansion: as soil freezes, it expands, which causes the pushing of the grass roots closer to the surface. This allows easier exposure to freezing temperatures, making the lawn more likely to experience lawn disease.
❄️brittle blades: during frosts, the grass blades become very brittle and weak. Any lawn traffic could damage lawn blades.

What can you do to keep your lawn healthy during/after a frost?
✅Limit lawn traffic: try to keep from walking on or applying stress to the lawn during a frost. Human and pet traffic must be limited!
✅NO MOW: Do not mow during a frost. Wait for the next warmer temperature day to mow, but make sure the lawn is dry (no moisture on the grass blades).
✅Follow-Up health check: Damage caused by frost can often go unseen for months. It is important to get a lawn health analysis to make sure your growing environment is still in tact and ready for nature to take its coarse. If altered in any way, there may still be time to prevent lawn health disasters from occurring come Spring.

The Turf Talk Team is ready to assist with our full lawn health analysis at just $125. Please message us to schedule yours today. As always, it is an honor to serve you and help keep your lawn healthy!

Lawn Health vs. Lawn Care

Lawn care is service that involves regular maintenance of the lawn, allowing continual improvement of lawn conditions on the surface level.

If you don't pay attention to your lawn health, you can very easily spend lots of money on your lawn care.

RAIN! RAIN! RAIN! There have been drops falling from the sky. Many have reported RAIN! This is good news! Although it is still unlikely our lawns will make a full recovery, the rain amounts we have received will relieve some lawn stress. You may see some areas start to green up a bit. Since the ground has slightly softened, this would be a great time to get that Fall aeration. Reach out to us if you have any questions in regards to helping your lawn recover from the drought.

Still no rain! What about the lawn? Do you give up on it? The answer is NO! The reality is, at this point, we will probably not see much of a recovery of our lawn this year. However, we can prep it now to see better growth coverage and good health come Spring. How? Here are a few things you can do:

✅ Aerate your lawn
✅ Spread a layer of topsoil over your lawn
✅ Rake dead grass to help the new grow in
✅ Over-Seed you lawn with existing grass type
✅ Apply a fertilizer to feed roots during winter

And of course, for the best outcome, and if able, make sure you water (seed cannot grow without moisture).

Reach out to us for a lawn analysis or to schedule a lawn consultation. We would be honored to help you meet your lawn needs!

Well, still no rain. We got a tiny, short lived rainfall for about 5 minutes in Centerville, OH. Definitely not enough to do much of anything to the lawn. So, what can we expect as this drought continues?

"Grass can only survive for a short period of time without water. Most common lawn grasses will begin to wilt and brown after 2-3 weeks without any rainfall or irrigation. If the drought conditions continue, the grass will become dormant and go into a state of suspended growth, which can allow it to survive for 4-6 weeks in total before it starts dying off. However, the length of time will depend on factors like the grass species, climate, soil type, and temperature. Grasses with deeper root systems tend to be more drought tolerant than shallow-rooted varieties"

In summary, watering is still the best option right now to keep the grass alive and to help it thrive. Water early mornings for about 45 minutes - 1 hour in each area at this point. If you cannot water, PLEASE pray for rain!
