Part 4 — When Real Estate Became More Than an Interest

The more I learned about homeownership, the more curious I became about real estate beyond my own home.

What started as simple curiosity slowly grew into something much bigger.

I began learning more about home values, equity, mortgages, investing, and the housing market. The more I learned, the more questions I had—and the more I wanted to understand.

I found myself paying closer attention to homes, the decisions people made, and the different ways real estate could impact someone’s future.

That’s when I began to realize how valuable it is to understand real estate.

You don’t have to become a real estate agent or an investor to benefit from learning about it.

For many of us, buying a home may be one of the biggest financial decisions we’ll ever make. Understanding how home values, equity, mortgages, and the housing market work can help us ask better questions, make more informed decisions, and better understand the investment we’ve made.

That realization only made me want to learn more.

At some point, I realized I was no longer learning about real estate simply because I owned a home.

I was learning because I genuinely enjoyed it.

It had become more than just an interest.

And eventually, I realized I was ready to take the next step.

Part 3 — Realizing a Home Is More Than Just a Place to Live 🏡

Many people think of their home as a place of comfort—an emotional sanctuary, a foundation for building memories, and a space to reset after the pressures of daily life.

And they’re absolutely right.

But as I became a homeowner and started learning about home values, home equity, and property ownership, I began looking at my home differently.

I realized that a home can be much more than just a place to live.

For our family, buying a home was one of the biggest financial commitments we had ever made. We invested hundreds of thousands of dollars, signed a mortgage, and committed ourselves to years of monthly payments.

We also learned that being a homeowner meant more than simply making those payments.

We repaired things. We maintained our home. We planned for future projects. Little by little, I realized those decisions could also affect the value of our home.

Things like location, size, and how well a home is maintained all play a role in its value. Taking care of our home wasn’t just about enjoying where we lived—it was also about protecting one of our family’s biggest investments.

Then I learned about home equity.

Home equity is the portion of your home’s value that you truly own. As you pay down your mortgage—and if your home’s value increases—your equity can grow over time. That equity becomes part of your overall net worth and can help build long-term financial security.

That’s when something clicked for me.

I realized that a home isn’t just a place to live.

It can also be a tool for building wealth and creating opportunities for your family’s future.

That realization completely changed the way I looked at real estate.

Part 2 — What Happened After We Became Homeowners 🏡

After we closed on our home and moved in, reality slowly started to settle in.

One of the first things we realized was that we needed more living space. With our growing family, we needed to finish the basement.

At one point, we even wondered if we had made the wrong decision. Maybe we should have bought a house with a finished basement instead. It might have cost the same—or even more—but at least the work would have already been done.

But a home isn’t something you can easily return like an item you bought from the store. 😅

We had just closed on our house. There was no turning back. We knew we’d be living with this decision for years to come—or at least until we were ready to sell.

So, we did what homeowners do.

We figured it out.

We finished the basement and created the extra living space our family needed.

Then, as we settled into our home, we started noticing other things.

The windows would sweat. The temperature throughout the house wasn’t even. One room would be colder while another felt warmer. We didn’t know exactly why, but we knew we had to figure it out.

Then summer came.

We worked on the landscaping in front of our home and planted trees in the backyard for more privacy.

After spending a full year in our home—through both a Wisconsin winter and summer—I started to realize just how many responsibilities came with being a homeowner.

There always seemed to be something to learn, fix, maintain, or plan for.

And somewhere in the middle of all of that, I started becoming curious about the financial side of owning a home.

I started paying more attention to our mortgage, property taxes, home values, and home equity. That’s when I began to realize that real estate could be more than just owning a place to live—it could also be a way to build wealth.

That realization led to even more questions.

At first, I was simply trying to understand the things I felt I needed to know as a homeowner. But one question would lead to another.

The more I learned about my own home, the more I found myself learning about different real estate topics.

Without really realizing it at the time, my interest in real estate was growing.

I wasn’t trying to become a real estate expert. I was simply trying to become a better homeowner.

And that’s where my curiosity really began.

Part 1 — Our First Home 🏡

Like many of you, my experience with real estate began when I purchased my first home.

My husband and I bought our first home in 2022, just three years into our marriage. At the time, we were expecting our third child and living with my parents-in-law. Our little family was growing quickly, and we had pretty much outgrown the small bedroom we called our space.

We knew it was time. We needed a place of our own—a home where our children could grow, where we could create memories, and where we could start building a future together as a family.

So, we started searching.

I still remember touring home after home. We put in offers on several houses, only to face rejection after rejection. It was definitely disappointing, especially when we thought we had finally found “the one.” But we didn’t give up. We just kept looking and hoping the next home would finally be ours.

For almost six months, we searched.

Then, finally… we found it. 🏠

Our very first home.

I still remember the excitement of finally getting the keys and knowing we had a place to call our own. At the time, I didn’t think much about real estate as a career or even an investment. I was simply a wife and a mom trying to find a home where our growing family could have more space and create memories together.

But looking back now, I realize that experience planted a seed in me.

The searching, the challenges, the disappointments, and finally finding our home—it all stayed with me. Somewhere along the way, I became curious about homes, homeownership, and real estate.

Sometimes, you don’t realize where a journey truly begins until you look back.

For me, I think it began with our very first home. 🏡❤️
