18 N Sandusky street is being brought back to life! Named after the original owner Martin Miller - we introduce The Miller Building!

18 N Sandusky is being fully renovated and will have office spaces available for lease on the 2nd floor (interested- reach out!), a new office for an Architecture and Design firm on the 3rd floor (www.nvironmentdesign.com) completed by early 2025. The 1st floor will be transformed into Miller's Market Hall later in 2025 so stay tuned for updates!

Coming Soon…The People’s Store!
(September 1967)

This month in 1967, big changes were coming to the Miller Building. The Delaware Gazette reported that work was about to begin on the new People’s Store, taking over the former Firestone Store on North Sandusky Street.

Plans called for an all-new storefront, new floors and fixtures, a lowered ceiling and an addition at the rear—creating a 10,000-square-foot first floor with 8,000 square feet devoted to sales.

The People’s Store would go on to become a familiar part of downtown Delaware for nearly three decades!

Nearly 60 years later, this same first floor is preparing for another transformation as 1854 Market Hall.

Different era. Different storefront. Same building continuing its long history as a place for commerce, community and gathering in downtown Delaware.

We love uncovering these little snapshots of what was happening here through the years—and this one feels especially familiar as we prepare for another new chapter!

With the Delaware County Fair beginning this week, we found a great connection between the Fair, our building’s history, and its founder, Martin Miller.

This historic newspaper clipping from 1867 (credit to Delaware Gazette and DCHS) announces an upcoming Delaware County Fair and notes that “Mr. M. Miller will have charge of the newly erected Dining Hall, where he will attend to feeding the hungry.”

We love discovering these little threads of history — especially as we work to bring food and gathering back to the first floor through 1854 Market Hall. More than a century and a half later, the idea remains remarkably familiar: good food, community, and a place for people to come together. Apparently, feeding the hungry is just part of The Miller Bldg.'s DNA.

The next chapter of The Miller Building is coming…

For more than 170 years, this building has been a place for food, commerce, entertainment and community in the heart of downtown Delaware.

Martin Miller was a baker, confectioner and restaurateur—but he also operated Miller’s Hall, which became one of the places to be in Delaware in the mid- to late-1800s. Musical acts, lecturers, poets, magicians, exhibitions and community gatherings all found their way here.

We love the history because it sounds a lot like what we envision for the building’s next chapter: coming to our first floor later this year - 1854 Market Hall — a new destination for food, local businesses, entertainment, events and gathering.

A little wisdom from the past that still rings true today (1867 to be exact!) With Delaware’s All Horse Parade tomorrow and the Little Brown Jug later this month, this old newspaper clipping caught our attention.
“A Horse’s Petition to His Driver” is a simple reminder from another era to treat your horse with patience, kindness and care — don’t overwork me, feed me well, give me clean water, care for me when I’m tired or sick, and never strike me in anger.
Delaware’s history is deeply intertwined with horses, making this little piece of history especially fitting to share this month.

Some advice never goes out of style.

This one is a bit more recent than some other things we’ve found (by “recent” - still probably 50 years ago!). Stairs Carry Out was a staple on South Sandusky from the 50’s thru the 80’s - located at 18 S Sandusky. From reading old posts- the gentleman that owned it was a good guy! Stay tuned for more treasures!

So close! Last little bit of the plaster- discovered 2 fireplaces that were bricked up and a doorway. If walls could talk!!

Tin up and plaster down on the 1st floor! The antique bar will be here in a few weeks- stay tuned for photos!

Annnd- the plaster is down! Check out where there was a door between the 2 sides of the basement (the 1st floor used to be 2 separate storefronts - until sometime in the mid 1930’s or 40’s - likely a Kroger in the mid 30’s that opened it up or Firestone in the mid 40’s).

More demo in the basement- check out these sweet little flowers on the wallpaper ( has been painted over so only a few are visible!). Perhaps from when the Chinese laundry was in the basement?
