Some walls hold generations.

This one belongs to my grandmother, and it is one of the most documented things in her home. The photos, the cross-stitch family tree, the faces of people whose names her grandchildren are still learning.

These two things are often confused, and honestly, you benefit from both.
A home appraisal assigns a formal dollar value to an item. For high-value pieces: art, jewelry, antiques, collectibles, a professional appraisal establishes worth on paper.

A home inventory documents the physical reality behind that value. Serial numbers, photos, condition, provenance, descriptions, the detailed record that confirms what you own and what state it was in.

An appraisal says what something is worth. An inventory proves what it is.
When a loss happens, you're often working with both documents together. The appraisal establishes value. The inventory establishes the item.

They're not the same thing. They're complementary.

Most families do it from memory, under grief, against a deadline. They walk through a parent's home trying to recall what was there, what should go where, and what needs to be accounted for, without any record to guide them.

Start room by room, one space at a time. Capture a wide shot of the full room first, then move to individual items. Don't overlook what's easy to miss: inside closets, garage equipment, electronics, art, and anything with a serial number or significant value.

Store it somewhere you can access from anywhere, not just from inside your home.
A record you create yourself is far better than no record at all.
