9/11 Tribute trail at Gray's Lake Park. Never Forget!

To honor those lost in the terrorist attacks on 9/11, Des Moines Park and Recreation is pleased to partner with Clear Channel Media and Entertainment and the United States Air Force to create a “Tribute Trail” at Gray’s Lake. Clear Channel and Air Force staffers will place 3, 213 individual flags – one for each person lost on that day. The Des Moines City Council on Monday approved an early plan for a $35 million housing development that will add 288 apartments to downtown Des Moines. Hubbell Realty said Cityville on 9th will be built south of downtown at S.W. 9th and Murphy streets. The nine-building complex is expected to provide 288 apartments and nearly 75,000 square feet of commercial space at the site of the old Des Moines-Pittsburgh steel plant. The recession had stalled plans to develop the area that borders the new M.L. King Parkway, but now a downtown housing crunch is fueling the new project. "We've got a very strong residential rental demand in the downtown area, and this will help bring residential and other development to that entire area," said Terry Vorbrich with Des Moines Economic Development. Hubbell Realty officials said they want to break ground on the project this fall and open the first buildings in spring 2014.

Iowa home sales pushed 15.5 percent higher to 3,602 in August over a year ago, the Iowa Association of Realtors said today. And the median sale prices climbed 3.8 percent to $129,700 more than August 2011.

Pending sales climbed 2.4 percent to 3,221 last month over a year earlier, and statewide inventory shrank 14.5 percent to 21,416 homes over a year earlier.
