Fall changes the way people use the land around Cascade and McCall. Cooler days make long hikes more comfortable, hunting seasons bring people deeper into the woods, summer crowds thin out, and the approach of winter starts to show what year-round access really means.

There’s still plenty of time for hiking, fishing, mountain biking, ATV riding, or simply spending a quieter day outside. The landscape doesn’t become less useful when summer ends. It becomes a different place.

Fall is often the preferred season for burning forestry slash in Idaho; not because the fire matters less, but because the weather that follows it does. Idaho Department of Lands notes that progressively wetter conditions after a fall burn can reduce concerns about fires holding over into the dry summer months.

The limbs, tops, and other woody material left after forestry work still have to cure, be piled properly, and be burned under suitable weather and air-quality conditions. On managed timberland, what happens after the trees come down is part of the work, too.

October 10th marks the opening of the general any-weapon deer season for antlered mule and white-tailed deer in Idaho Game Management Units 23, 24, and 25. Across this part of Central Idaho, hunting season brings hunters into areas where public land, private property, timberland, and recreation trails are often close together.

The mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae) is a small, dark beetle that tunnels beneath the bark of lodgepole pine. It introduces fungi that can leave a blue-gray stain in the wood, and a successful attack can kill the tree. The stain changes the wood’s appearance, but doesn’t necessarily weaken the lumber.

At DF Development, we aim to operate in sync with nature and that means using only beetle-killed pine for the cabin's walls, floors, and roof. It’s a way to put timber from affected forests to use and show future landowners what a thoughtful material choice can look like in a home of their own.
