If you’re buying in Hillsborough, this proposal is about more than a lower tax bill. Tampa Bay Business & Wealth reports the homestead exemption for non-school property taxes would rise from $50,000 to $150,000 in 2027, then to $250,000 in 2028, if 60% of voters approve it on Nov. 3. But Hillsborough says the first step alone would cut annual property tax revenue by $248.6 million, or 15.7%. County Administrator Bonnie Wise warned balancing later budgets could require reduced services, layoffs, and new or increased taxes, assessments, and fees. For buyers, that suggests monthly affordability may depend on more than just the exemption itself.
