Southside is a small town located in Montgomery County, Tennessee. As of the last available census data in 2020, the population of Southside was approximately 500 residents. The town is situated in the northern part of the county, near the Kentucky-Tennessee border.
The local economy primarily revolves around agriculture and small-scale businesses. Farming and related activities play a significant role in sustaining the community. Limited industrial development is present, and most residents commute to nearby towns for employment opportunities.
Southside is characterized by its rural landscape, featuring rolling hills and open spaces. The town is situated in proximity to the Cumberland River, providing natural scenery and recreational opportunities for residents.
Southside has a historical significance related to salt peter mining during the 19th century. Salt peter, a key component in the production of gunpowder, was mined in the region and contributed to the military efforts during the War of 1812, and The Mexican War in 1848. It is unlikely to have been of significance during the Civil War since that part of TN was occupied by the Union in 1862.
Montgomery County is located in Middle Tennessee and serves as the home to various communities, including Southside. The county seat is Clarksville, which is the largest city and commercial hub. As of the 2020 census, the county's population was around 214,000 residents. It has a diverse demographic composition, with a mix of urban and rural populations. The county exhibits a growing population due to its proximity to Fort Campbell and economic opportunities.
The economy of Montgomery County is diverse, with a focus on manufacturing, healthcare, and military-related activities. Fort Campbell, a major U.S. Army installation, has a significant impact on the local economy, contributing to defense-related industries and services. Clarksville, the county seat, serves as a regional center for commerce and healthcare. It is the only incorporated city in Montgomery County.
Geographically, Montgomery County is also characterized by a mix of urban and rural landscapes. The Cumberland River traverses the county, offering scenic views and recreational opportunities. The topography includes rolling hills and flatlands, contributing to the area's agricultural productivity and boasts a variety of state and federal parks. One such notable destination is the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area, located to the northwest(see post, “Are you a Looper”). This expansive area encompasses both Kentucky and Tennessee and features diverse ecosystems, including forests, wetlands, and open lands. Visitors can explore hiking trails, go boating on the lakes, and observe wildlife in their natural habitats. The Land Between the Lakes is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts seeking a range of recreational activities.
Moving southward, Montgomery County itself is home to Dunbar Cave State Park. Situated in Clarksville, this state park holds historical significance as one of the most prominent caves in the region. The cave has been used by humans for thousands of years, and visitors can take guided tours to explore its geological formations and learn about its cultural history. The park also offers hiking trails and picnicking areas for a day of outdoor enjoyment.
Within a short distance to the east lies Fort Donelson National Battlefield, a site with historical importance from the Civil War. This national park preserves the battleground where Union forces, led by General Ulysses S. Grant, achieved a significant victory in 1862. Visitors can explore the battlefield, visit the National Cemetery, and gain insights into the strategic and historical aspects of the Civil War.
Heading westward from Southside, visitors can discover the charms of Dunbar Cave State Natural Area. Apart from the notable cave, this natural area offers hiking trails, providing an opportunity for nature lovers to observe the local flora and fauna. The park is known for its serene landscapes and is a peaceful retreat for those seeking a connection with the outdoors.
Further enriching the natural offerings in the region, the Cross Creeks National Wildlife Refuge is located to the northwest. This refuge, situated along the Cumberland River, provides crucial habitat for migratory birds and other wildlife. Birdwatchers can appreciate the diverse avian species that call this area home, while outdoor enthusiasts can explore the refuge through designated trails and observation points.
Adjacent to Southside, Fort Campbell not only serves as a major military installation but also offers recreational facilities. The base includes parks, sports fields, and outdoor spaces for military personnel and their families. This adds to the overall quality of life for those stationed at Fort Campbell and contributes to the region's recreational offerings.
The parks surrounding Southside and Montgomery County provide a rich tapestry of natural, historical, and recreational experiences. From the vast landscapes of the Land Between the Lakes to the historical significance of Fort Donelson, the region offers diverse opportunities for residents and visitors to connect with nature and explore the area's cultural heritage.
Fort Campbell, located partially in Montgomery County and partially in Kentucky, is home to the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). The 101st Airborne Division has a storied history, with notable involvement in World War II, the Vietnam War, and subsequent conflicts. The base plays a crucial role in the local economy and has historical significance as a training ground for airborne forces. The presence of Fort Campbell has a substantial impact on the demographics and culture of Montgomery County.
In summary, Southside and surrounding County reflect a blend of rural and urban characteristics, with an interesting history, a diverse economy driven by agriculture and military-related activities, and notable features like Fort Campbell and state parks shaping the region's identity.

Old Hickory is a suburban community located in Davidson County, Tennessee, within the Nashville metropolitan area. It is situated on the northern shore of the Cumberland River, approximately 13 miles northeast of downtown Nashville. The town is known for its beautiful lakeside setting, scenic water views, recreational opportunities, as well as its proximity to Nashville.
The community began as a planned village, funded by the Federal Government and Dupont in 1918 to serve as housing for the powder plant Dupont would open, giving it the nickname of Powder City. At is maximum the facility attracted 58,000 workers, but, sadly or maybe happily, for a short time only. Very soon after the plant opened the armistice was signed, ending WW 1. Within a very short time, no more than 500 people were employed at the plant.
Today, Old Hickory is a community with a rich history offering an attractive suburban lifestyle located along the Cumberland River, with the convenience of nearby Nashville. It is sure to be a hit for those who appreciate these amenities.
