Oppose HB 1119 and stop higher land taxes for property taxes.

House Bill 1119, “Authority for Different Mill Levy Rates,” would allow local governments to tax land at a higher rate than the structures built on it — fundamentally changing Colorado’s property tax system.

This proposal creates a split-levy system, moving away from Colorado’s longstanding approach of taxing total property value.

The impact:
• Higher tax burdens for homeowners, especially in areas with rising land values
• Increased pressure on long-time owners, retirees, and those on fixed incomes
• Potential barriers for first-time buyers and affordable housing participants
• Inequities between owner-occupied and non-owner-occupied housing

HB 1119 undermines fairness and uniformity and adds unnecessary complexity for local governments.

HB 1119 will be heard Thursday, April 16.

The Colorado legislature will convene for a special session on August 26th to address property tax relief. However, there are some legislators who may use this session to pursue legislation to reclassify property or enact new fees that could actually increase taxes or fees on homeowners. We need you to contact your legislators, encouraging them only to support legislation that provides property tax relief for all homeowners while protecting local service and oppose any other legislation that could dismantle the proposed property tax relief efforts or raise property taxes on segments of the residential housing market.

The special session could potentially last three days - make sure you contact your state legislators today to ensure your voice is heard!
