This couple built a debt-free, off-grid home in the Georgia woods for under $20,000. They bought the land for $5,000, converted a $6,500 lofted barn into a 500-sq-ft home for $12,500, and powered it entirely with solar. Skipping an $18,000 septic system, they installed a biogas digester, giving them both a bathroom and methane cooking fuel. Over time, they expanded to 16 acres with gardens, ponds, and eight Airbnbs, all without taking on debt.
