Rising Sun is the roomier side of Roaring Bear: two decks, a private hot tub on the covered lower deck, and space for up to seven.

Downstairs is a king suite with deck access. Upstairs has another king bedroom, a twin nook, and a queen sleeper sofa. It is a good fit when the same Smokies trip needs a little more sleeping flexibility.

Looking for a quieter Smokies activity? The National Park Service lists a free Artist-in-Residence visitor program with painter Robert Palmerton at Sugarlands Visitor Center on Saturday, September 19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Some Gatlinburg trips need room for seven. Others are better with two king suites, a private hot tub, and a west-facing deck built for the end of the day.

Haus of the Setting Sun sleeps up to five. The king bedrooms are on separate floors, the first-floor suite opens to the deck, and the second-floor jetted tub faces the mountains. Rising Sun is right across the street if your group needs more space; for up to five, we would start here.

Gatlinburg’s official calendar lists the Harvest Festival beginning September 1 and continuing into November.

Our practical way to plan a fall day is simple: choose one downtown activity, one park stop, and leave enough time for the mountain road back to the cabin. Trying to cover Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, and the national park in one tight schedule usually creates more driving than vacation.
