"The task of the modern educator is not to cut down jungles, but to irrigate deserts." - C.S. Lewis.
When people find out that I was a public High School teacher earlier in my career, they often ask if I miss working with a roomful of rowdy, distracted individuals who won't put their cell phones away. I tell them, "I still do. I'm just compensated better now." 😉
In truth, there are some days when I do miss it. It isn't the lessons, the grading, or the curriculum that I miss.
I miss the curious conversations.
I miss the moments of inspiration when a student who was struggling to grasp a concept had their "Aha" moment.
I miss seeing the frustration on their face when I would answer their questions with a question.
I miss the students who would stop by to discuss something they read... even if it wasn't part of an assignment.
I miss tearing up reading a final essay written by a student because they had found their voice.
I learned more about , , and as a teacher than I had in all the previous years of my career that came before.
I want to encourage all of my colleagues who are still in the classroom to inspire the next generation of , , and . You are in the profession that creates all other professions. Thank you!
