Everyone talks about buying the vacation home. Nobody talks enough about carrying the vacation home.

It’s not just the mortgage. It’s the second vehicle because flying in and renting a car every trip gets old fast. It’s the extra insurance. The annual registration and tags. The boat. The jet skis. The trailers. The toys that somehow all come with their own bills.

Then there’s maintenance. And if your second home is in a rural area like most are, even basic repairs and upgrades usually cost more because labor, materials, and contractors are harder to get. Small projects turn into big invoices quickly.

And when you aren’t there full time, the house still has to be maintained. The yard still grows. Trees still need trimming. Snow still needs plowing. Things still break whether you’re there or not. This Memorial Day, all of us at W and Partners pause to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

Today is more than a holiday; it is a time to reflect on the courage, service, and selflessness of those who gave their lives protecting the freedoms we enjoy every day. Because of their sacrifice, we have the opportunity to build homes, create memories, support our communities, and pursue our dreams.

We also extend our deepest gratitude to the military families who continue to carry the weight of that sacrifice with strength and pride.

As we spend time with loved ones this weekend, may we never forget the true meaning of Memorial Day and the heroes who made it possible.
