Preach Martha!

Martha Stewart’s prime years in our society covered my college years. I learned about her from my roommate’s mother and we used to laugh at how excessive she was.

Although I still consider her excessive for many people, her mindset and reasoning are completely on track with mine as a professional organizer.

This month’s PASRS (Professional Association of Senior Referral Specialists) meeting was held at The Park at Copper Creek Independent Living Community in Chandler.

As always, I met inspiring people and learned of services available that are very important. Although we all work with seniors, many of us provide services that benefit people of all ages.

One inspiring woman I met is Karoline Davidson, Director of Community Care at Bunker Family Funerals (https://bunkerfuneral.com/). The topic of funerals and cremation is not a fun one, but this woman is a ball of energy! Her face lit up when she described the level of grief support they offer. In addition to counseling, they offer assistance with paperwork and requirements that most people are not familiar with. This can be very overwhelming.

As a professional organizer, I work with many people who have experienced loss; some of them are still sorting out paperwork and financial responsibilities. Karoline will be my go-to resource to recommend.

I recently worked with a client who has many years of memories accumulated in storage and it’s been difficult for him to go through everything.

Usually paperwork and photos become “homework” because it can consume time from downsizing and the organizing portion is difficult to achieve.

But with this particular client, I sensed that he was not going to be able to go through the boxes alone. So I slowed down the pace and we did it together. For every item he told me to keep I asked him “what is your plan?”. At first, he didn’t know. And that was ok.

During this time I saw him smile as he shared his memories. I witnessed his wonder as to why some items were saved. His energy shifted and he started to become decisive. He changed his plan regarding how we would work together. His end goal became more about him and having space for him to be himself.

We have more work to do. Now that he has a plan and realizes that he is in the driver’s seat, my impact as his organizer will be more meaningful 💜

People hire organizers to help them make these decisions about their belongings because it can be a very heavy process. We carry some of that weight knowing that, on the other side, they will FEEL lighter.
