Afternoon update!
The severe-weather setup across northeast Minnesota and northern Wisconsin remains highly volatile but still dependent on storms breaking through a strong cap. The SPC continues an Enhanced Risk, with damaging winds the main concern, including possible 75+ mph gusts, while initial supercells could produce very large hail and a couple of tornadoes before merging into fast-moving clusters later this evening. A new mesoscale discussion covers an upstream storm in northwestern Minnesota, but no severe-thunderstorm or tornado watch is active yet. The atmosphere is extremely unstable, with roughly 3,000–4,000+ J/kg of CAPE and about 50 knots of deep-layer shear, which means any storm that becomes surface-based could intensify rapidly. The most likely timing is late afternoon in far northern Minnesota, early evening across the Iron Range and Twin Ports, then evening into overnight across northwest and north-central Wisconsin. Localized flash flooding is also possible where storms repeat, but wind and hail remain the primary threats.
