If your summer bucket list still has โpick fruit straight from the farmโ sitting there untouched, August is basically giving you one last nudge.
Right now, Michigan is moving through that delicious little window between summer berries and full-blown apple season. ๐๐ซ๐
Peaches are especially worth watching. Michiganโs peach season generally begins in late July, with mid-August often being the sweet spot for picking. Depending on the variety and weather, some farms can keep peaches going into September. And if youโre near Fennville, Crane Orchards offers peach picking through late August.
Raspberries are playing their own seasonal game, too. Summer varieties can stick around through mid-August, while fall raspberries begin arriving in late August and can continue into September. So yes, there is a brief moment when summer and fall fruit overlap โ basically Michiganโs way of refusing to pick a favorite season. ๐
And then there are the apples.
๐ September is when things really get serious, with the best apple picking generally happening then, although some varieties can arrive as early as August and continue into early October. Translation: the c***r mills are warming up. The donuts are coming. We are all in danger.
One thing the article gets absolutely right: call before you go. Crop conditions can change quickly, and farms know exactly what is ripe, what is picked out and what is worth coming for that day. Going early in the morning can also mean better picking before the crowds arrive.
So if youโve been waiting for a sign to make an August farm tripโฆ
๐ Pick peaches.
๐ซ Hunt for those last blueberries.
โค๏ธ Grab some raspberries.
๐ And start planning that September apple-picking day.
